Transform a Plain Wooden Stool into a Statement Piece

There’s something incredibly satisfying about breathing new life into a tired piece of furniture. Today, I’m sharing one of my favourite weekend projects – transforming a basic wooden stool into a vibrant statement piece that’ll add personality to any room.

What You’ll Need:

  • A wooden stool (charity shops are brilliant for these!)
  • Sandpaper (medium and fine grit)
  • Wood primer
  • Chalk paint in your chosen colour
  • Small artist’s brush
  • Clear wax or varnish
  • Decorative stencil (optional)

Step 1: Prepare Your Canvas

Start by giving your stool a thorough clean and letting it dry completely. Sand down any rough areas with medium-grit sandpaper, then smooth with fine grit. This creates the perfect surface for paint to adhere properly. Don’t skip this step – it’s the difference between a professional finish and paint that chips off next week!

Step 2: Prime Time

Apply a thin, even coat of wood primer. I know it seems like an extra faff, but primer ensures your gorgeous colour won’t be affected by any stains or tannins in the wood. Let it dry completely – perfect time for a cuppa!

Step 3: Colour Your World

Here’s where the magic happens! Apply your first coat of chalk paint using smooth, even strokes. I’m obsessed with a gorgeous sage green at the moment – it works beautifully in kitchens and adds such a calming vibe. Don’t worry if the first coat looks patchy; chalk paint typically needs two coats for full coverage.

Step 4: Add Personality (Optional)

Once your base colour is completely dry, consider adding a simple pattern. A geometric stencil on the seat or delicate florals around the legs can transform your piece from lovely to absolutely stunning. Keep it simple – sometimes less truly is more.

Step 5: Protect Your Hard Work

Finish with a coat of clear wax or varnish to protect against daily wear. For stools that’ll see heavy use, I always recommend a good-quality varnish.

Helen’s Top Tip: Don’t be afraid of bold colours! That sunny yellow you’re nervous about could be exactly what your hallway needs to feel more welcoming.

The best part about upcycling? You’ve created something completely unique whilst giving an unloved item a second chance. Plus, you’ll have that lovely feeling of accomplishment every time you see your handiwork!
